Our Gardens

Sustainable Solano Permaculture
Design Certificate Garden

(feat. Laundry-to-Landscape from Son Studio with future greywater development)

Designed by instructors Lydia Neilsen and Anne Freiwald and created by students, the garden developed an understanding of permaculture and design that used whole systems thinking: how everything works together as a part of a larger whole (to apply to the environment, our internal state of being and our organizations and social systems). In a PINA-recognized Permaculture Design Certificate course, participants who learned a permaculture curriculum gained hands-on experience in designing and transforming our local landscape using design principles and incorporating the use of captured rainwater and greywater systems.

Shero Herb Spiral and Historical Stepping Stones

The herb spiral was designed by Soilogical and built by the daughters of Willowroot House using the bricks salvaged from the original chimney. The bricks found on the property, along with the stepping stones depicting the lighthouse from the home’s Northeastern birthplace, have not been dated, but are believed to be circa nineteenth- and early-twentieth centuries.

Michael Wedgley was one of the first new residents at the Understory Casita, helping to shape the vision for the house and gardens. He completely renourished the soil onsite, collaborated on the sustainable water infrastructure, created outdoor spaces for regeneration and restoration of ecosystems using native plants and permaculture practices, and maintains the landscape with organic gardening and reduced water usage.
